WhatsApp formatting syntax explained

WhatsApp supports four text formatting styles using simple punctuation marks. Wrap text in *asterisks* for bold, _underscores_ for italic, ~tildes~ for strikethrough, and ```triple backticks``` for monospace. These work on WhatsApp for iOS, Android, and WhatsApp Web. The formatting only renders when sent — this tool gives you a live preview so you can see exactly how it will look before sending.

When to use formatting in business messages

Bold works well for product names, prices, and key details you want customers to notice immediately. Italic is useful for adding emphasis or quoting something. Strikethrough is perfect for showing a sale — original price → new price. Monospace is handy for sharing codes, order numbers, or any data that needs to be read character by character. Avoid over-formatting: stick to one or two formats per message to keep it readable.

WhatsApp message character limits

WhatsApp supports messages up to 65,536 characters — far more than you'll typically need. However, very long messages can be cut off in notifications on some devices. For business messages, aim to keep your key information in the first 200–300 characters. If you need to send longer content regularly, consider using FormBeep to receive structured form submissions on WhatsApp instead of relying on customers to type everything out.

How do I make text bold in WhatsApp?

Wrap your text in asterisks: *your bold text*. Make sure there are no spaces between the asterisks and the first/last letter. It will appear bold when sent.

Does formatting work in WhatsApp Business?

Yes. The same formatting syntax (*bold*, _italic_, ~strikethrough~, ```monospace```) works in WhatsApp Business, WhatsApp for iOS, Android, and WhatsApp Web.

Can I combine formats, like bold italic?

Yes. You can combine formatting by nesting the markers: *_bold italic_* renders as bold italic text in WhatsApp.

Why isn't my formatting showing up?

Make sure there are no spaces between the marker and the first/last character of the text. For example, * bold * won't work, but *bold* will. Also confirm you're on a recent version of WhatsApp.
